You Can Count on Me: When Kindness Becomes a Classroom

Quick question :

Have you ever really counted on someone? Like you needed them and they were just…there?—-when you needed support, guidance or just someone who believed in you?

It feels so nice…so overwhelming when someone does that for you, their presence means a lot.

Makes you feel like you matter.

We’ve all had days where we wanted someone to say:

“I'll sail the world to find you If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see I'll be the light to guide you We find out what we're made of

When we are called to help our friends in need”

Yeah, you know that part of the song. The one where Bruno Mars says, “You can count on me, like 1, 2, 3…”

That’s the kind of comfort we all need sometimes.

Now imagine being that someone…for a child who has almost nothing to count on.

Well.

One short backstory -

I’ve met little cute and ambitious humans who belong to underprivileged families and they don’t study in some 4 walls classrooms, they study under the sky with big dreams in tiny hearts and are valued.

When I sat down and heard about their stories, all I felt was gratitude.

Gratitude - for their smiles, their will to learn despite the odds.

Because let’s be honest —we can’t imagine being a little kid who doesn’t know if they’ll eat today, let alone go to school.

Their first lesson at that place wasn’t A-B-C instead It started with empathy:-

“Let’s start with your name.”

Well well

Now let me introduce you to that place-

Welcome to Pehchaan The Street School.

This isn’t some typical traditional school, it is a type of conventional school in an unconventional form that provides free education to underprivileged children.

What Started with only 10 children and five volunteers Pehchaan The Street School has now become a ray of hope for many underprivileged children. They have ten centers and are providing free learning to more than 1,600 children.

They create a safe place for their children and go beyond textbooks focusing on the holistic development of children.

They offer vocational training, workshops on personal hygiene, arts and crafts, music, dance etc, and Community engagement

This organisation is volunteer-driven and these volunteers turned out to be someone to whom Pehchaan The Street School’s children count. Their ‘bhaiya’ and ‘didi’ are their mentors, friends, teacher, they aren’t just people teaching ABCs or 123.

They’re listeners, dreamers, protectors. They dance when the kids dance,they play with the kids, and quietly sit beside a child who just needs someone there.They help children to realize their dream and provide learning to empower them and gain independence in future.

They’re not perfect. None of us are.

But they’re the kind of humans who show up — every week — with nothing but their time, love, and story.

This organization truly values partnership with local communities which offers support and resources to the organization.A wonderful instance of this collaboration is their recent Hunger Relief Campaign,in partnership with Jan Sanjeevni Trust, they organized a beautiful hunger relief campaign, its so heartwarming to see these efforts come together to make a difference.

This non-profit organization is turning ten and to celebrate this occasion Delhi Girl Canvas created amazing art.

This organization made sure to offer an inclusive environment and improve self-worth and confidence in underprivileged children. They have affected more than 5000 lives by now.

Ways You Can Support Pehchaan The Street School

• Volunteer -on the ground or online and contribute your time as per your availability.

• Internship -on the ground or online, one can choose from multiple positions as per interest. All

interns get a certificate after completion of the internship.

•Member-Membership is for everyone who can't commit time or can't work either online or

offline. One can also donate a certain amount and become a member of the trust.

Once in life, we all should be a part of such a great cause.
