Courage X Pehchaan The Street School

 Hello Readers

Can we talk?

Just for a bit. I was thinking about someone,

His name is Courage.

Abandoned Pup, founded by Muriel, who lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband, Eustace Bagge.

BUT CREEPY STUFF HAPPENS IN NOWHERE.

It is up to Courage to save his new home.

Well, is it reminiscing?

Ye you remember it right -

Courage The Cowardly Dog.

The pink little dog with eyes bigger than his face and a heart bigger than his body.

Every day, something alarming or scary would show up at their doorstep: monsters, aliens, creepy shadows, ghosts.

And who stood up to fight them off?

Who saved his family?

Courage.

Yes, he was called the cowardly dog and was always scared but he never turned away and saved his home.

Isn't it funny how everyone called him a Coward, but he was the one who always came forward to save his family—his home?

He proved that courage isn't about fearlessness, but about showing up despite the fear.

When I was younger, I watched him just as a funny cartoon character who was always scared. But now that I am older, I see him differently. He was true to his name—courage. He was honest.

He was always scared and still showed up for his loved ones.

Always shows what real COURAGE is.

Why Am I Talking About Courage?

You all must be thinking why I am suddenly talking about his character.

Well because there's a place— more like a home - a safe place- for some children called Pehchaan The Street School. It is not some regular school - no air-conditioned classroom, No smart boards, No walls. Just children sitting under the sky holding books with eyes full of hope.

About Pehchaan The Street School

This is a non-profit organization that provides education to underprivileged children. Started in 2015 with only ten children and five volunteers.

Today, it has expanded significantly, they have ten centres around Delhi and Delhi NCR like Indraprastha Metro Station, GTB Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Noida Sector 35, Sunder Nursery, Rohini Sector 3, Rohini Sector 7, Dilshad Garden & Kamla Nagar, educating over 1,600 children.

This organization is run and maintained by volunteers, over 500 active volunteers work on the ground and additionally a large team working online. They believe in the philosophy that “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Therefore, they offer holistic education to Pehchaan The Street School’s children to empower them and achieve independence.

Volunteers and interns work closely with the children and share a common goal,i.e.- to encourage and empower these children to realize and achieve their goals through education and opportunity regardless of their background and break free from the continuous cycle of poverty.

Pehchaan The Street School’s children come from places where every day they have some battles to fight. For instance- doing house chores, being a breadwinner for their families, going through harsh comments like -

 “You’re not good enough.”

“You won't make it”

“You can't dream”

Imagine going through all this and showing up.

For?

To study, to achieve their goals, to improve their lifestyles — to dream freely.

Every one of those kids is - Courage.

They show up despite being afraid of not making it- their presence represents bravery.

We often misunderstood courage as shouting or fighting - sometimes it is. But more often it is quieter.

Sometimes courage also looks like going to school knowing you don't have lunch,

You don't have that extraordinary bag. But still showing up to rewrite your story and not stuck in the given lineage.

The main source of their courage is those people in Pehchaan The Street School who believe in these kids - show their faith and work closely with them to help them realize their dreams and work towards them.

Life of Student at Pehchaan The Street School

Now let’s look at how a day goes for kids at Pehchaan The Street School.

Just like Courage the Cowardly Dog spends his day with sweet Muriel, not so sweet Eustace, and fighting ghosts, demons, and aliens —

children at Pehchaan The Street School spend their day with kind and empathetic volunteers, learning new things, and fighting real-life challenges. Many of these children come from a home where sometimes they don't even know if they will even have food or not let alone go to school.

But still, they show up — they show the courage to dream and to build a better for themselves and their families despite the odds.

Pehchaan The Street School’s children's day begins with silent prayers and later with the introduction of one good habit- this small moment encourages positive behaviour and values.

After that, children are settled into their pre-assigned groups, and teachers are allotted to each group based on the curriculum.

The teaching session begins, which includes subject-based learning or educational activities.

All activities are study-related and designed to align with Pehchaan The Street School's learning goals.

This continues until around 4:30 to 4:45 PM.

Once the academic session wraps up, children participate in fun activities, which are conducted once a week to keep the atmosphere lively and engaging.

Finally, at 5:00 PM, a psychology session is held for the older children, while the younger ones are given leave for the day.

This organization also have a star-based reward system to keep the students motivated to pay attention and do well in their work. It goes like this-

Students get stars for participating, staying focused, and doing good work. They collect these stars all month long. At the end of the month, the students with the most stars win cool educational prizes like:

  • Books
  • Notebooks
  • Drawing kits
  • Pencil boxes
  • Stationery sets (with pens, pencils, erasers, etc.

Pehchaan the Street School ain’t just a traditional school — it’s where children realize their dreams and break free from the cycle of poverty. Here, every child and volunteer brings a new spirit.

Pehchaan The Street School offers an environment with inclusivity, support and open conversations

Well

Meet Nargis

I met one of the kids of Pehchaan The Street School, Her name is Nargis. She enjoys the supportive environment and finds it easier to learn English there, despite struggling with the subject. She wants to become a singer and also excel in her studies to make her parents proud.

Once meaningless words now started making sense.

Support Through Sponsorship

Pehchaan The Street School also help in sponsoring a child and is supported by crowdfunding. The sponsorship cost ranges from ₹500 to ₹1,000 per month. This organization is bridging the gap for underprivileged children, allowing them to attain their goals.

Individual contributions cover the child’s basic educational resources, like uniforms, stationery, and books, allowing them to access quality education and achieve their dreams.

Recent Highlights

In April 2025, Pehchaan The Street School turned ten. And there was a grand celebration- children danced and sang.

The celebrations for the day took place at Harleyquin Café, Connaught Place. By 11 AM, attendees started arriving. These were volunteers from content, social media, graphics, HR, and the dedicated on-ground team of teachers, psychology interns, and project managers.

One of the biggest highlights was that our senior team leaders, Scienthia and Nuba, were awarded the prestigious title of Superheroes of 2025.

Many other awards were also distributed to acknowledge the efforts of volunteers. The event was filled with engaging performances-dance, singing, and more.

New inspiring tales were also shared during the celebration — for instance, Pushkar, who has a passion for music. Seeing his dedication, an influencer gifted him a guitar, and now, Asmit from HR, who's musically inclined, is teaching him how to play.(link- https://www.instagram.com/reel/DIuIocLzYRp/?igsh=NWVnemZxNHNtd2N1)

Lack of Funding- This is the most important need for an NGO to work successfully.

Lack Of Resources- Due to lack of funding NGOs are unable to fulfil many requirements many times.

Need for more volunteers- Pehchaan The Street School is a volunteer-driven organisation and dedicated volunteers are one of the major needs.

Inadequate infrastructure - It affects the delivery of education and limits access for children.
