Realising Sapne: Empowering Lives with Pehchaan The Street School

Main Toh Badlon Se Door Jaungi

Main Toh Apna Hi Sur Paungi

Hai Jo Crazy Crazy Sapne Mere

Sare Chunn Ke Main Bun Aaungi

Haan Mana Iss Duniya Ki Hu Hi Nahi Main

Apni Hi Duniya Bnaungi

Ke Ek Zindagi Meri

Sau Khwaishaan

Ha Ek Zindagi Meri

100 Khwaishaan

The song “Ek Zindagi” from Angrezi Medium captures the dream of every child—to dream big, desire to reach their path, and achieve independence.

But not every child gets the resources to even realise their dreams. Many remain trapped in the circumstances they were born into, bound by family expectations and struggles, unable to break free from the cycle of poverty.

Statistically, 86.8% in the 14-18 year age group are enrolled in an educational institution, but there are gaps as they grow older — while 3.9% of 14-year-olds are not in school, the figure climbs to 32.6% for 18-year-olds. Also, only 5.6% have opted for vocational training or other related courses.

The reason for this education gap can be poverty, gender inequality, no quality education, child labour and lack of infrastructure.

Imagine a world where every child, regardless of their background, gets a fair chance at education.

This is exactly what Pehchaan The Street School wants to achieve and has been taking required action. They provide free and quality education to underprivileged children, aiming to help them break out of the cycle of poverty.

“Haan Mana Iss Duniya Ki Hu Hi Nahi Main

Apni Hi Duniya Bnaungi”

These lines resonate with the dream of these children— to create a space where they are not limited by their circumstances, have the freedom to achieve their goals, and build their identity.

Pehchaan means identity.

Pehchaan the Street School is a ten-year-old organisation with around 10 centres and more than 500 volunteers on the ground and a larger team working online bringing learning to underprivileged children and focusing on providing Pehchaan – an identity to underprivileged children.

Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another. (G.K. Chesterton). In this context, Pehchaan the Street School is playing a pivotal role in shaping and empowering future policymakers— our changemakers. They go beyond books and offer practical knowledge, recognising the demands of today's world. Through vocational training in various areas and engaging workshops, they also provide a space for free and open conversation. They teach girls and boys in the same space and provide similar resources, which reduces gender discrimination.

They believe that “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Therefore, they offer holistic education to Pehchaan The Street School’s children to empower them.

All the volunteers work closely with the children. They teach and help them build confidence to prepare for real-world experience.

We can say that Pehchaan The Street School is a type of conventional school in an unconventional form.

They also provide financial support to their children and collaborate with local communities for support. For instance,Pehchaan The Street School collaborated with Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University to raise funds. Jesus and Mary College organized their Annual Fest “Montage 2025” from the 20th to the 21st of February. They decorated the stalls with posters and other pleasant items like dream catchers, bookmarks, and pens to raise awareness about Pehchaan The Street School.

A quality education is crucial for each individual. It not only opens doors but also helps them discover their dreams and motivates them to work towards achieving those goals—they realise

“Ha Ek Zindagi Meri

100 Khwaishaan”
